Sistim Ejaan dan Pelafalan Bahasa Rejang
1. Aksentuasi setiap perkataan jatuh atas huruf-hidup yang terakhir: caci (cacI) `uang'; bujang (bujAng) `bujang'. Kalau huruf-hidup terahir itu adalah diftong, aksentuasinya jatuh atas kepala diptong: bukeu (bukEu) `buku’; sapié (sapIé) `sampai'; umeak ('umEa') `rumah’; tidoa (tidOa) `tidur’. Diftong-diftong Musi-Sambé adalah sebelas: eu, ei, ai, au, oi, éu, uo, ié, éa, oa, ea.
Umpamanya itu adalah: an [?an] ‘lama’; us [?us] `jatuh’; oak [?oa?] ‘jauh’; awié [?awié] ‘seperti’.
4. Huruf -g di akhir perkataan diucapkan -k. Misalnya Rejang olog [olok] 'ulat'; mapag [mapak] 'mengawinkan'.
5. Huruf -k di akhir perkataan diucapkan [?] (glottal stop) sama halnya dengan bahasa Indonesia anak [ana?]. Misalnya Rejang anak [ana?]; umeak [um«a?] `rumah’.

1. Perinduan: Kampungku
Kalau pagi-pagi dingin sekali. Kadang-kadang tak tahan kita mandi. Matahari terbit kira-kira pukul tujuh.
Maksud saya, orang Curup orang Rejang. Hampir semuanya petani.

1. My Hometown
I am originally a Rejang from the village of Sambé. But my parents and I moved into town when I was small, so I consider my hometown to be Curup.
Curup is a chilly city because it is situated at the foot of the mountains. The most well known is Mount Kaba. It can be very cold especially in the early morning. Sometimes we can hardly stand to take a bath. The sun rises around seven o'clock.
The people of Curup are mostly Rejangs. Almost all of them have farms. Some tend cabbage patches or coffee fields, and there are others that own rice fields. A few plant corn and peanuts.
In Curup there are not many places for us to go. If we have a holiday the most popular places are Suban Hot Springs, Lake Tes, and after that the village of Tes. There are also others but they not as popular.
On Tuesdays many people from the villages go out because it is market day. If we should meet our friends, we ask: "Where are you going?" For sure they will answer: "To Tuesday Market!" This is the day that unmarried girls look for their boyfriends from the other villages.
The area around Curup has lots of market days, for example, Wednesday Market, Thursday Market. But these markets are only one day a week in villages some distance from Tuesday Market in Curup.
Every day except holidays, the people leave for the fields early in the morning. Along the road young boys meet young girls also going to the fields, and so they tease each other. Sometimes they become steady boyfriends and girlfriends.
When I remember all these things—Oh! how my thoughts soar! So much so that I long to be in my hometown again.

2. Lalan
Jadi dia berniat hendak pulang.
Tiba-tiba didengarnya suara ribut-ribut.
Demikianlah ceritaku.
2. Lalan
Here is a story that the old people used to tell. The story goes like this. In one village there lived a young man. His name was Bujang Kurung. One day he went fishing. He brought uncooked rice and salt. He left after the sun was up. He walked slowly. Soon he arrived at the place he intended to fish. He began to fish. No fish were biting. The sun was high in the sky. Since he had had no luck, he decided to go home.
As he was about to leave he heard people talking. He decided to have a look. He was amazed to see they were very beautiful people. They were maidens. There was one that was the most beautiful of all. She was the youngest.
Slowly Bujang Kurung approached without their knowing it. Suddenly he snatched the clothes of the youngest maiden. After bathing when they went to put on their things, they found that the clothing of the youngest had disappeared. Her elder sisters had already put on their clothes intending to return to their home in the sky. But the youngest could no longer fly. Her clothes were gone. She cried for a long time—what can I say? Her elder sisters also cried seeing their younger sister unable to return home. Finally they all decided to depart. They had to leave the youngest one behind.
Bujang Kurung saw everything that happened. He was amazed. He hadn’t suspected that they were children of the gods. He hid the clothes he had taken earlier. He carried them away running fast. After that, Bujang Kurung approached the youngest. He asked why she had not returned to the sky. The youngest replied that her clothes had disappeared. After that Bujang Kurung invited her to his village. The youngest agreed. Bujang Kurung asked her name. Her name was Lalan.
After arriving in the village, she was taken to Bujang Kurung's house. Lalan lived there for a long time. Bujang Kurung was attracted to Lalan. Lalan also wanted, also loved, Bujang Kurung. Not long after that the two were married by the people of the village.
My story is finished.

3. Kancil Si Pembohong
Kemudian kancil menangis tersedu-sedu.
"Bolehkah aku menabuhnya," tanya harimau pohon itu.
"Jangan," kata kancil sambil menangis.
"Mengapa," tanya harimau.
"Sebab hatiku sedih nian jika aku mendengarnya."
"Ijinkanlah aku menabuhnya, Kancil," pinta harimau. "Nanti aku tak akan menyantapmu."
"Tetapi bila kau menabuhnya hati ku sangat sedih. Namun jika kau ingin menabuhnya biarlah aku pergi jauh-jauh dulu," kata kancil. "Apabila aku bilang `Sudah!' baru kau mulai menabuhnya, supaya aku tidak mendengarnya lagi," kata kancil.
3. Mousedeer the Trickster
Once there was a Mousedeer. His story goes like this. It was the age of the Prophet Solomon. At that time the animals could all speak.
It being a hot day, Mousedeer went walking in the quiet forest. He went to the houses of his friends, but all his friends had gone out. "Ahh, well, I'll just go to sleep," thought Mousedeer. He went to find a shady tree. He began to sleep. But just as he was falling asleep, he heard a rustling sound. When he looked around, he saw a Wildcat poised and ready to eat him. Mousedeer wanted to run but he couldn't. Instead he pretended to be sad. Wildcat asked, "Why are you sad, Mousedeer? Are you afraid because I'm going to eat you?"
"I am not sad because you want to eat me," said Mousedeer. "What saddens me is, who will guard my grandfather's drum?" asked Mousedeer while pointing to a bee's nest at the top of a tree. Then Mousedeer wept inconsolably.
"May I beat the drum, Mousedeer?" asked Wildcat.
"Don't!" cried Mousedeer still weeping.
"Why not?" said Wildcat.
"Because my heart will be very sad if I hear it."
"Let me beat it, Mousedeer," said Wildcat. "Then I promise I won't eat you."
"But if you beat it, my heart will be very sad," said Mousedeer. "But if you want to beat it, allow me to go far away first. When I shout `Ready!' then you may begin beating the drum. I won't be able to hear it," said Mousedeer.

Buang mak ebet gidong begulung. Si makié. Jano nadeak te? Tedung jagei tak ne melilit Buang lajeu Buang matié. Udo o Kacéa melilei oak-oak ne.
"Pergilah," kata harimau pohon itu. Kemudian pergilah kancil jauh-jauh. Setelah dia jauh berteriaklah dia "Sudah!"
***
"All right," said the Wildcat.
So Mousedeer ran far away. From afar, he shouted, "Ready!" Hearing Mousedeer say "Ready!" Wildcat began to beat on the bee's nest. What do you think happened? The queen bee came out and stung Wildcat. Our Wildcat screamed in pain as he was stung by the bees. Wherever he ran he was stung by the bees endlessly until Wildcat died.
Let's return the story to our Mousedeer. He ran away as fast as he could go. After that he stopped near a snake that was asleep. What he did not know was that there was also a bear right behind him that wanted to eat Mousedeer. But Mousedeer said, "Now you wait just a minute!" because if Bear wanted to eat him, he must first put on the Prophet Solomon's belt which was coiled nearby, because Mousedeer was its keeper by order of the Prophet Solomon himself. Bear picked up the coiled belt. He put it on, and what do you suppose happened next? The snake woke up and squeezed Bear until he died. After that Mousedeer ran away as far as he could go.

Kura-kura pun berkata: "Sudah berjantung pisangku." Beruk pun berkata: "Sudah berjantung pisangku itu."
Setelah cukup lama, masaklah pisang kura-kura, tetapi kura-kura tak bisa memanjatnya. Disuruhnya beruk memanjatnya. Setelah beruk sampai di atas pohon, dia mulai makan pisang itu sesisir, dua sisir sampai hampir habis. Setelah itu kura-kura berkata: "Bantinglah untukku sebuah, Beruk!"
"Sebuah pun enak," kata si beruk.
"Kalau begitu bantinglah kulitnya saja," kata si kura-kura.
"Kulitnya pun enak," kata beruk.
Pergilah dia mengunjungi kepiting. Diceritakannya maksudnya.
4. The Crab and the Ape
Once upon a time in the land of the Prophet Solomon there lived an ape and a turtle. They both planted banana trees. As for Turtle, he planted a young banana shoot, but as for Ape, he planted a mature banana plant with its flower tip hanging down.
The banana tree planted by Ape did not grow. The banana tree planted by Turtle thrived. Said Turtle, "My banana tree is already big."
"My banana tree is already big, too," said Ape.
Eventually Turtle's banana plant flowered. Said Turtle to Ape, "My banana tree has flowered already."
"Mine has flowered too," said Ape.
After a while Turtle's bananas ripened. But Turtle could not climb. Turtle asked Ape to climb up and get the bananas. When Ape reached the top, Ape started eating them. One bunch, gulp! Two bunches, gulp! After that, how many bananas would he gulp down?
Said Turtle, "Throw down a bunch for me, Ape!"
"A sweet bunch," said Ape.
"At least throw me the peelings, Ape!" said Turtle.
"The peelings are sweet," said Ape. Soon a whole hand of bananas was gone, devoured by Ape.
"How can I get revenge on this Ape?" thought Turtle. "He can climb, he can run, I am slow. Ah, I'll just ask help from Crab." He went to Crab. He explained what he wanted.
"Pakoak lak males Be'uk yo?" nékér Kulei. Si pacak kenék, si pacak melupat, uku panuo bai cenok. A, uku minai tulung ngen Kang bai." Si aleu magea Kang. Cenrito kelak ne.
"Jijei!" nadeak Kang. Udo o Kang aleu mesoa Be'uk, coa temeu. Kang diem beak buteu emet Be'uk.
Coa an sudo o Be'uk teko, temot das buteu penan Kang sebunyin. Temot Be'uk das butew, mulai Kang madeak.
"Kang katip!" nadeak Kang.
"Huuus! Api si do o?" nadeak Be'uk.
"Kang katip," nadeak Kang. Kang katip-katip botoak Be'uk.
"Hus! Api do o?" nadeak Be'uk.
"Huuuut!" senimet Kang. "Héy, ko leyen di nenog leyen di menyimet." Sako be'uk yam ne di menyimet. Udo o si mak putung tak temtus yam ne déwék lajeu Be'uk matié.
Do o ba amen tun tamak ige. Sako ne ijé ne di semimet kécék ne o yam ne. Kes ne Kang.
"Baiklah," kata kepiting. Waktu dia duduk, kepiting pun berkata:
"Kepiting jepit," kata kepiting.
"Huss!, siapa itu?" kata beruk.
"Kepiting jepit-jepit penis beruk."
"Huuut!
***
"Agreed!" said Crab. Crab went looking for Ape but couldn't find him. So Crab stayed under a rock waiting for him to pass by.
Not long after that Ape came by and sat on the rock where Crab was hiding. With Ape sitting on the rock, Crab began to speak.
"Crabs pinch!" said Crab.
"Huuus! Who is that anyway?" said Ape.
"Crabs pinch!" said Crab. Crab pinched and pinched Ape's penis.
"Huuus! Who's that?" said Ape.
"Huuuut!" answered Crab.
"Hey, I speak to one and another answers." Then Ape took a stick and beat on his own penis until he died.
That's what happens when people are greedy. Ape thought his own penis was talking to him. In fact it was Crab.

5. Meterei
Here's another story the old people used to tell. There was a man named Majei who had nine children. The youngest one's name was Meterei. This Meterei was very pretty. Extremely pretty! Everybody was attracted to her. But this made her elder sisters jealous of Meterei. They kept saying that Meterei was as bad as she could be. They were angry with her all the time.
One day something turned up missing at their house. Everyone was in an uproar looking for it. When they didn't find it, they accused Meterei of stealing it.
To make a long story short, Meterei was to be banished to the forest. Meterei did not know she was to be abandoned by her father. Not long after that her father asked her to accompany him to the forest. Before dawn they left carrying rice in a sack and vegetables in a bamboo. They arrived in the deep forest near an elephant trail, where her father built a makeshift shelter. When the shelter was ready, her father told Meterei to wait there for him while he went to fetch firewood nearby. Then her father went away.
Oh, how Meterei waited for him! For a long time she waited. Her father did not come back. Soon it would be getting dark.
The shelter was near the elephant trail where animals passed by on their way home from searching for food. The first to pass by was Elephant. He asked Meterei, "Hey, Meterei, what are you doing here? It will be night before you know it!"
After that animals passed by in a continuous stream. The last to come was Python. He asked Meterei, "What are you waiting for here? Night is falling fast."
"Uku namung bapak ku," nadeak Meterei.
Terus udo o deu benatang melitas. Penyudo ne melitas edung merdaung. Tennei ne Meterei, "Jano nemet nu nak piyo? Bilei ikak-berikak bi lak kelmen."
Senimet Meterei, "Uku coadé penan bélék. Dalen coa ku namen. Uku namung bapak ku," nadeak Meterei.

"Aku dibuang ayahku," jawab Meterei.
Hanya itulah ceritanya.

"I was abandoned by my father," answered Meterei.
"In that case you can come home with me," said Python. Then Python lifted Meterei onto his back. After that he carried Meterei to his village, fording rivers and passing under the forest canopy.
After that they arrived at Python's village. They were welcomed by the people there. As soon as he arrived in the village, Python changed into a handsome young man. Not long after that he was married to Meterei by the people of the village.
The story ends there.

"Mau cari ikan," jawab kancil.
"Aku ikut boleh tidak?" tanya babi hutan.
"Marilah," kata kancil. Setelah itu dia terus berjalan bersama-sama babi hutan. Tak lama kemudian bertemulah mereka dengan seekor harimau.
"Mau kemana kalian?" tanya harimau.
"Mencari ikan," kata kancil.
"Aku ikut ya?" kata harimau.
"Marilah," jawab kancil. Setelah itu perlahan-lahan mereka berjalan. Tak lama kemudian bertemulah mereka dengan seekor gajah.
"Mau kemana kalian?" kata gajah.
Disuruhnya harimau menjaganya. Yang lainnya terus mencari ikan.

6. Mousedeer and the Giant
Once there was a story about a mousedeer who wanted to catch fish in a river not far from the place where he lived. On the day he went fishing, he set out long before dawn. He traveled fast. On the way he met a wild boar.
Boar asked, "Hoy, 'Deer! Where are you going?"
"Going to look for fish," said Mousedeer.
"I'll join you if it's all right, ok?" said Boar.
"Fine!" said Mousedeer. He continued to walk along with Boar. Not long after that they met a tiger.
"Where are you going?" asked Tiger.
"Fishing," answered Mousedeer.
"I'll join you," said Tiger.
"Come on!" answered Mousedeer. They all set out again walking. Not long after that they met Elephant.
"Where are you going?" asked Elephant.
"We are going fishing," said Mousedeer.
"Me too, if you don't mind?" asked Elephant.
"No problem!" said Mousedeer.
On and on they walked across ravines and through the forest until they arrived at the place Mousedeer had told them about. They began to dam up the river. Boar was the chief digger. Elephant hauled the mud and dirt. In no time the water was dammed up and the bed was dry. They began to collect the fish. The catch was thrown up onto the land and placed under a tree, where Tiger was posted as the watch guard. The others continued to collect fish.

Pergilah kancil menjaganya. Raksasa belum datang. Kancil mengambil akar rotan lalu dia menyambungnya panjang-panjang. Waktu dia sedang bekerja, datanglah raksasa hendak makan ikan. Tapi heran dia melihat kancil sedang begitu.
"Jangan," kata kancil.
"Naaa, Kancil, kita famili," kata raksasa itu sambil marah. "Kau kumakan nanti!"
"Silahkan saja, makanlah!" kata Kancil. "Nanti atau sekarang sama-sama kita mati semua!" Raksasa mengeluh dan tambah takut.
Ahirnya, "Carilah tali banyak-banyak," kata kancil. Pergilah si raksasa mencari tali rotan banyak-banyak.

Our story turns to the tiger guarding the fish. While he was dutifully guarding the fish, along came a huge giant named Ogre.
"Hoy, Tiger, what have you got there?"
"I'm guarding some fish," said Tiger.
"I am going to eat your catch," said Ogre.
"Don't do that!" said Tiger.
"Then I'll kill you!" said Ogre. Tiger trembled when he heard that. He ran to Mousedeer. He explained that Ogre was eating the fish.
"I've heard enough! Your long claws are useless," said Mousedeer. Next, Mousedeer ordered Elephant to guard the fish, but Elephant wasn't any braver. He ran when he saw the giant. After that Boar was dispatched, but he wasn't brave either.
"I've had just about enough of all of you!" said Mousedeer. "You are very big, but you are not very brave. I shall guard them myself." Off went Mousedeer to guard the fish. Ogre had not yet come back. Mousedeer began to collect rattan vines. He proceeded to fasten them together into a long rope. While he was doing that, Ogre came back intending to eat the fish. But he was surprised when he saw what Mousedeer was doing.
He asked, "Oi, Mousedeer, what have you got there?"
"I am making a rope because the world is coming to an end. This tree is the only thing that will not be destroyed," said Mousedeer.
"Let me join you, 'Deer," said Ogre.
"No, I'm sorry, you can't," said Mousedeer.
"Laaa, 'Deer, we are brothers," said Ogre while becoming angry. "Then I will just have to eat you!" he said.
"Go ahead and eat me!" said Mousedeer. "Now or later, we're all going die anyway." Ogre looked lost and confused, and he trembled with fear. So Mousedeer said, "Ok, ok. Fetch lots of rope," said Mousedeer. Off went Ogre to get all the rattan he could find.

Diikatnya banyak-banyak.
"Coba berontak," kata kancil.

6. Mousedeer and the Giant (continued)
When he had found plenty, Mousedeer said, "Tie the vines around your body and fasten yourself to that tree." Ogre began to tie himself up. He tied himself as tight as he could.
"Try to move!" said Mousedeer. But Ogre could no longer get loose.
"The sky is getting dark, it is going to rain," said Mousedeer. "The world is coming to an end." After that Mousedeer bound Ogre's neck until he couldn't breathe, and so he died.
When Ogre was dead, Mousedeer called his friends and told them to look. His friends were all in awe of Mousedeer.

7. Ketinoak
7. Ketinoak
Long ago in a village far from the city there lived a beautiful young maiden. Her name was Meterei. She was a child of the gods who descended to earth because she made the other gods jealous when they saw how beautiful she was.
Early one morning she went to bathe at the river not far from her house. As she proceeded to wash her hair, her reflection was visible in the water. The bathing place was under a tree. At the top of the tree was an evil spirit haunting it. The evil spirit's name was Ketinoak. She was sitting on the top branch of that big tree. She saw Meterei's reflection in the water, and she thought how beautiful that reflection was. It made her extremely jealous to see it.
In another village there lived a handsome young man. His name was Bujang Kurung. One day he went wandering in the forest carrying a quail decoy. He walked slowly in and out of the forest, entering and exiting many villages. When he arrived in Meterei's village, he couldn't help but notice how beautiful she was. He asked his mother and father to go courting. His mother did court Meterei. Meterei also was willing. After negotiating how much money and whatever else, the date was set. There remained only to wait for the wedding day.
All this was overheard by the female spirit in the big tree at the place where people bathe. She became jealous when she heard all this. Meterei was already preparing for her wedding. The next day while everyone was celebrating, Meterei went to the river to bathe. The female spirit saw her preparing to bathe. She pushed her hard so that Meterei was swept downstream. Then the evil spirit changed into a woman looking like Meterei. She pretended to be Meterei. No one knew that the one returning from the river was not Meterei. Bujang Kurung was married to that evil spirit by the village people.

Begitulah ceritanya.
***
Now our story returns to the real Meterei. She was swept downstream to a village. She was rescued. People adopted her and treated her like their own child.
Our story returns again to the female spirit living with Bujang Kurung. Her name was Ketinoak. What nobody could figure out was the why she was acting so coquettishly.
Not long after being married, Bujang Kurung got sick. His back stuck to the straw mat, his body grew thin—just skin and bones was all he was. He didn't want to eat, he even refused water. Everyone was worried about him. Various medicines were administered but Bujang Kurung was unable to take anything.
After a while a person from another village came to visit him. The visitor was a woman. She brought rice, she brought water, and she told Bujang Kurung to take them. It was amazing how Bujang Kurung suddenly improved, and regained his appetite. But when the woman went back to her village, Bujang Kurung relapsed and fell sick again. Whenever the woman came, Bujang Kurung got well again. Bujang Kurung kept on like that for quite a long time.
Let's keep the story short. After a while the people asked, "Who are you really?" The woman did not want to reveal her identity. Only when pressed did she tell her story. After hearing the story the people realized that she was Meterei, and that she had been swept downstream some time ago.
Ketinoak also heard what had happened. The people grabbed her and held her under water until she died. Meterei stayed in the village. Bujang Kurung recovered his health completely.

Hari buruk, hujan terus."
"Mari kita berdiang saja," sahut kura-kura. Kemudian kura-kura mengambil kayu dan menghidupkan api besar-besar. Berdianglah beruk dengan kura-kura menanti hujan reda. Tak lama kemudian hujan pun reda. Bertanyalah kura-kura: "Kemana kita hari ini?"
"Entahlah," sahut beruk sambil berpikir. "Oh, ada kerja kita," kata beruk sambil tertawa. Kita mencuri jahe Maji saja.
Ketika beruk memakannya, menjeritlah dia keras sekali: "Wah, pedas sekali jahe Maji!"
"Jangan bicara keras," kata kura-kura. Tapi beruk bicara tambah keras.
"Aduh Mbak! Alangkah pedas jahe Maji!" teriak beruk.
"Diam," seru kura-kura. Tapi beruk berteriak bertambah keras sehingga Maji mengetahuinya.

8. The Ape and the Turtle
Once there was an ape that lived next door to a turtle. Early one morning Ape paid a visit to Turtle's house. At that time it was raining. Said Ape to Turtle, "What shall we do, brother? The weather is terrible, raining cats and dogs."
"Let's just build a fire," said Turtle.
"All right!" said Ape. After that Turtle fetched wood and lit as big a fire as he could. Ape and Turtle warmed themselves waiting for the rain to stop. Not long after that the rain stopped. Turtle asked, "Where shall we go today?"
"I don't know," said Ape while thinking. "Oh, I have an idea!" said Ape laughing. "Let's go steal Majei's ginger. He won't be going to the field. It's raining."
"Good idea!" said Turtle. Soon they were off on their way to steal ginger. They walked together slowly on the approach to Majei's ginger patch. When they got there, Ape began to eat the ginger. Turtle ate some, too. As Ape ate he hollered, "Waaa! Majei's ginger is hot!" He hollered this very loudly.
"Don't talk loud!" said Turtle.
But Ape cried out even louder, "Oh, Mama! Majei's ginger is hot!" shouted Ape.
"Be quiet!" said Turtle.
But Ape's shouting just got louder until Majei heard him. He chased after Ape and Turtle. Ape ran fast, so Turtle was one that got caught. Majei threw Turtle into a patch of thorny salak fruits. Turtle was caught fast in the thorn patch. His body twisted slowly in the wind.
After throwing Turtle into the thorn patch Majei went home. Slowly Ape approached Turtle who was still stuck fast on the thorns. Carefully he freed Turtle from the place where he was caught. When free, Turtle jerked wildly, causing Ape to fall and get trapped in the thorn patch. Turtle was unable to help so that Ape died.
