News - 03 March, 2006
Six Sumatran elephants (Elephas maximus sumatranus) found dead on the jungle floor of Mahato, Riau province, on Indonesia‘s Sumatra island. They were believed to have been poisoned. Mahato forest is located about 300 kilometers north of Riau Capital of Pekanbaru and is identified as one of 15 elephant pockets in Riau. Though it serves as a protected forest, many parts of the area have been converted into settlements and plantations. WWF is doing an autopsy today (3/3) to find out exact details on how and who might poisoned the wild beasts.
