IT TOOK us 5 years of combing Kinta valley’s vast wetland before finally locating a wild and thriving Vanda Hookeriana colony. It’s like finding lost love. The feeling was exhilarating.
This colony is tucked on a large patch of board-leaf semi-aquatic plant. On first trip, our intrepid photographer had to wade for hours in murky swamp that’s infested with carnivourous snake-head fishes, locals call “toman”. These monstrous fishes can grow up to 4 feet and can swallow a cat at one go. Thanks to pointers from some villagers, nowadays we access this hidden spot via a bush path.
Don’t get it wrong. The board-like leaves do not belong to Vanda Hookeriana. They are just piggy-backs for Vanda H to perch on.
Why so long? The simple answer is, rampant poarching is taking its toll. A long time ago, Vanda H used to grow in abundance over the outbacks of Tanjung Tualang, Malim Nawar, Kampar, Belanja and Sungai Terap wetland regions. It was so common, back then locals called it “Kinta weed”.
Well, everything changed since Singapore declared it’s national flower in 15th April 1981.
Not many know that Singapore’s national flower Vanda Miss Joaquim has its origin tracing back to Malim Nawar wetland. Vanda Miss Joaquim is a natural hybrid between Vanda Teres which originated from Burma and Vanda Hookeriana. First discovered in the garden of Agnes Joaquim in 1893 in Singapore, it went on to beat 40 other flowers to lay claim for the national flower title.
After more than 100 years, today, the Vanda Miss J is loosing its lustre, a bane normally occuring on all hybrids, and rouge orchidists are always on the look out for fresh Hookeriana genes to cultivate and bring back the colour of Vanda Miss J.
Vanda H has spike-like leaves and lengthy aerial roots to get a good grip on its host.
Avid orchidists travel from all over the world to catch a glimpse of its rare beauty. Thriving in cluster of colony, Vanda H. need full blast of heaty sun as well as the dampness of wetland to propagate.
Local orchidists say Vanda H. hates to “get its feet wet”. How true. Despite the constant need for moisture, it prefers to perch on top of other aquatic plants to stay above the waterline.
A photo shot of wild Vanda Hookeriana is rare. Many famous orchidists have not even seen one before
